January in the Texas Garden

To my fellow Texas Gardeners . . .

January is a wonderful time to work in the garden. From cool season vegetables to large trees, now is the time to get your hands in the dirt! Check out some of my favorite tasks to accomplish in January. I may not get to them all (and may even hire some of it out), but these are the goals I shoot for, and I hope it inspires you to plant something new this year.

Now that we’ve had our big freeze of the year, spring like temperatures will start showing up more. And this month is the perfect time to work on your cool season vegetables so that you can start harvesting in March and April before our summer heat arrives. You’ll need to cover quite a few of these if temperatures get below 20 again, but we all know that’s probably not gonna happen.

As always, don’t plant everything!

Plant what your family loves & you enjoy growing.

    • I have a blog post about growing your own potatoes HERE

  • Plant Trees, Native Shrubs and Evergreen Ground Cover

  • Bulbs & Roses

  • Add color to your pots & garden: pansies, violas, snapdragons and dianthus

January Gardening Tasks:

  • Prune fruit trees, grapes and blackberries.

  • Order all spring and summer seeds. My favorite place for seeds is BAKER CREEK SEEDS. Again, I only purchase what we love! If it’s not a favorite, I buy it from the grocery store.

  • Prune freeze damaged perennials.

  • Prune rosemary and oregano.

  • Divide and move perennials.

  • Prep your garden beds by adding compost and mulch.

  • Prune your oak trees. Make sure you’re following procedures to PREVENT OAK WILT on your property.
